What is a basic dissertation layout to follow?
The overall dissertation layout is as follows:
Title: The title of the dissertation comprises of a dissertation topic and a subject matter. For e.g.
“Corporate Social Responsibility and Market Share: An Investigation into how a medium size high street retailer can increase its market share.”
Title page mentions:
A signed statement: This is included to give written assurance about the originality of dissertation work exclusively done by you.
Acknowledgements: This part of dissertation layout acknowledges the contribution of others throughout the dissertation especially the help of supervisor.
Abstract: A summary of your work that is covered in one page being 1/3rd of aims and methodology and 1/3rd of findings.

Chapter 1. Introduction
Introduces the topic, the subject, the research (aims and methodology) and the dissertation (layout).
Chapter 2. Literature Review
This part of dissertation layout review and critiques the literature hence identifying the knowledge that we have and gaps b/w them. This chapter also sets up the research questions.
Chapter 3. Aims and Methodology.
This chapter of dissertation layout outlines the aims of the research and the ways to meet them. This chapter also gives review of varieties of methodological probabilities dealing with primary and secondary data collection and methods of analysis.
Chapter 4. Context
It deals with the subject under investigation based primarily on secondary data.
Chapter 5. Findings.
Presents the results of the primary research.
Chapter 6. Discussion and Analysis
Discusses the findings in the context of the literature review. Do the findings corroborate or refute the body of theory?
Chapter 7. Conclusion.
This chapter summarises the aims and key findings, points to the implications of the findings for both theory and practice, acknowledges the limitations of the work (the questions that the research has not been able to answer) and points to the directions for future research. (may also include some recommendations)
Note: not all of these chapters will be necessary in all dissertations, and sometimes one of these chapeters might be split into two. It depends on the nature of the research topic.
